Russell Simmons’ Rush Card: Is it really instilling fiscal responsibility?

A family approached me recently on Facebook concerning Russell Simmons’ Rush Card. It was particularly strange to me to see that a child so young was deeply involved in the advertisement of this card online. Furthermore, this boy was soliciting for the company on Facebook to the extent that I almost mistook him for an employee of Mr. Simmons’ company. Now, not to knock down his passion for success, but I was personally disturbed at the card because I believe that the card’s target audience, African-Americans, is being robbed from a skill that most of them lack: fiscal responsibility.

How can you tell me that the card is a great idea, when all that it teaches its users to do is to keep swiping until you can’t swipe anymore? I don’t care how Mr. Simmons dresses the card it will always be designed for people with fiscal management issues. What happened to the skills of learning how to balance a check book and keeping an accurate ledger so you don't overdraft your account? I use a debit card without a limit due to my exceptionally high credit score, but I am able to control my spending. My parents thaught me how to keep an accurate ledger thus teaching me the meaning of fiscal responsibility.

So is the Rush Card teaching its users this same lesson or is it producing more irresponsible consumers?
